Consumer prices up 1.7 percent over the year ending in August

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 1.7 percent from August 2013 to August 2014, the smallest 12-month change since March. The index for food rose 2.7 percent over the year, while the index for energy was up 0.4 percent. The index for all items less food and energy also rose 1.7 percent over the last 12 months.

Consumer prices for education increased 3.3 percent from August 2013 to August 2014, while prices for housing increased 2.6 percent. Prices for new vehicles edged up 0.4 percent over the year, and prices for used cars and trucks were unchanged.
Consumer prices for medical care increased 2.1 percent over the year. Prices for medical care commodities rose 2.6 percent, while prices for medical care services increased 1.9 percent.
Consumer prices showed little or no change from August 2013 to August 2014 for apparel, communication, and recreation.
