Gasoline index continues to fall sharply, down 21 percent in 2014

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.8 percent from December 2013 to December 2014. The energy index declined 10.6 percent over the year, led by sharp declines in the indexes for gasoline and fuel oil.

(1) This index series was calculated using a Laspeyres estimator. All other item stratum index series were calculated using a geometric means estimator.

The index for food rose 3.4 percent, its largest 12-month increase since February 2012. The index for food at home increased 3.7 percent, with the indexes for fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry, and fish all rising over that period. The index for food away from home rose 3.0 percent.

For the year ending in December 2014, the index for all items less food and energy rose 1.6 percent. The increase was the smallest since the 12 months ending in February 2014. The shelter index increased 2.9 percent, while the medical care services index increased 2.4 percent.
