CPI rose 1.0 percent over the year ending June 2016

For the 12 months ending June 2016, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 1.0 percent, lower than the average 12-month percent change over the past decade of 1.7 percent. The index for all items less food and energy rose 2.3 percent from June 2015 to June 2016, exceeding its 10-year average of 1.9 percent.

The food index increased 0.3 percent from June 2015 to June 2016. The food at home index declined 1.3 percent over that period and the food away from home index increased 2.6 percent. Four of the six major grocery store food group indexes decreased over the period. The index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs declined 5.0 percent over the year, and the dairy and related products index declined 2.2 percent.

The energy index declined 9.4 percent over the 12 months ending June 2016, with all of its major components falling over the period. The fuel oil index dropped 19.6 percent over the year, and the gasoline index declined 15.4 percent. The natural gas index fell 5.0 percent over the same period, and the electricity index fell 1.8 percent.

Much of the 2.3-percent increase in the all items less food and energy index over the past 12 months resulted from a 3.5-percent increase in the shelter index and a 3.6-percent increase in the medical care index. The indexes for airline fares, used cars and trucks, new vehicles, communication, and household furnishings and operations all declined from June 2015 to June 2016.
