CPI increased 2.2 percent for year ending September 2017

From September 2016 to September 2017, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 2.2 percent. The 12-month change has been accelerating since June, when it was 1.6 percent.

The 12-month change in the index for all items less food and energy was unchanged in September, remaining at 1.7 percent for the fifth consecutive month. The energy index rose 10.1 percent over the same period, its largest over-the-year increase since March 2017. The food index increased 1.2 percent over the past year.

The gasoline index increased 19.3 percent over the last 12 months. The other energy component indexes also rose over the past year, with the index for natural gas rising 3.8 percent and the index for electricity increasing 1.7 percent.
