Nonfarm payroll employment growth totaled 2.2 million in 2016

Nonfarm job growth totaled 2.2 million in 2016, less than the increase of 2.7 million in 2015. Since 1986, the December-to-December change in payroll employment has averaged 1.5 million.

Over the 1986–2016 period, the change in payroll employment for the 12 months ending in December has ranged from a decrease of 5.1 million in 2009 to an increase of 3.9 million in 1994.
