Many people shop for the holidays after Thanksgiving. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are two popular shopping days in which retailers often offer special deals. Someone has to package and deliver all those gifts, and transportation and material moving workers are vital. Average hourly wages for full-time, entry-level workers in transportation and material moving occupations in 2017 ranged from $14.64 in the Midland, Texas, metropolitan area to $9.27 in Huntsville, Alabama.

Areas with the lowest average wages for these workers include Decatur, Alabama ($9.31), Montgomery, Alabama ($9.32), Hattiesburg, Mississippi ($9.35), and Dothan, Alabama ($9.37).
Eighty-six metropolitan areas had average hourly wages lower than $11.00 for full-time, entry-level workers in transportation and material moving occupations. Of these 86 areas, 13 of them were in or included Alabama. Another 207 areas had average wages from $11.00 to $12.99, and 21 areas had average hourly wages of $13.00 or more.
These estimates are from the Modeled Wage Estimates derived from the National Compensation Survey and the Occupational Employment Statistics survey. Entry-level transportation and material moving workers are in jobs classified as Level 1 by the National Compensation Survey. These jobs require little or no prior experience or training and work under close supervision and strict guidelines. Modeled Wage Estimates are available for detailed occupations, geographic areas, and job characteristics, including full- and part-time status, work levels, and bargaining status. Relative standard errors also are available to allow users to assess the reliability of estimates.
