Over the 12 months ending November 2017, unemployment rates were lower in 304 of the 388 metropolitan areas, higher in 67 areas, and unchanged in 17 areas. The national unemployment rate in November 2017 was 3.9 percent, not seasonally adjusted, down from 4.4 percent a year earlier.

El Centro, California, had the largest over-the-year unemployment rate decrease in November (–3.0 percentage points), followed by Odessa, Texas (–2.5 points), and Mobile, Alabama (–2.4 points). Ocean City, New Jersey, had the largest over-the-year rate increase (+1.4 points), followed by Vineland-Bridgeton, New Jersey (+1.0 point), and New Bedford, Massachusetts (+0.9 point).

Ames, Iowa, had the lowest unemployment rate in November 2017 (1.5 percent), followed by Mankato-North Mankato, Minnesota, and Urban Honolulu, Hawaii (1.9 percent each). El Centro, California (19.8 percent) and Yuma, Arizona (15.6 percent) had the highest unemployment rates. A total of 187 areas had November 2017 jobless rates above the U.S. rate of 3.9 percent, 182 areas had rates below it, and 19 areas had rates equal to that of the nation.
