From September 2018 to September 2019, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 1.7 percent, the same increase as for the 12 months ending in August 2019.

Prices for all items less food and energy rose 2.4 percent from September 2018 to September 2019, the same increase as for the year ending August 2019.
For the year ending September 2019, food prices rose 1.8 percent. Over that period, prices for food at home increased 0.6 percent while prices for food away from home increased 3.2 percent. Energy prices decreased 4.8 percent. Prices for gasoline (−8.2 percent), fuel oil (−8.5 percent), and natural gas (−2.7 percent) declined. Electricity was the only major energy component for which prices increased for the year ending September 2019, increasing 0.7 percent.
