From November 2017 to November 2018, nonfarm payroll employment increased for 54 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged for 334 areas. The largest over-the-year percentage gains in employment occurred in Reno, Nevada (+5.9 percent), Midland, Texas (+5.7 percent), and Colorado Springs, Colorado (+5.0 percent). The largest over-the-year employment increases occurred in Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas (+114,400), New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA (+113,000), and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+94,700).

Over the year, nonfarm employment rose in 37 of the 51 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of 1 million or more, while employment was essentially unchanged in 14 areas. The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment in these large metropolitan areas occurred in Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida (+4.8 percent), Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Arizona (+4.2 percent), and Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nevada (+3.8 percent).
