Unemployment rates were lower in February 2020 than a year earlier in 277 of the 389 metropolitan areas, higher in 80 areas, and unchanged in 32 areas. A total of 73 areas had jobless rates lower than 3.0 percent and 6 areas had rates of at least 10.0 percent.

In February, Ames, Iowa, had the lowest unemployment rate, 1.7 percent, while El Centro, California, had the highest unemployment rate, 17.1 percent. A total of 191 areas had February jobless rates below the U.S. rate of 3.8 percent, 176 areas had rates above it, and 22 areas had rates equal to that of the nation.

Yakima, Washington, had the largest over-the-year unemployment rate decrease in February (−2.4 percentage points). Thirty-six other areas had rate declines of at least 1.0 percentage point. The largest over-the-year rate increase occurred in Johnstown, Pennsylvania (+1.0 percentage point).

Of the 51 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of 1 million or more, Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, Florida, had the lowest unemployment rate in February, 2.3 percent. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, had the highest jobless rate among the large areas, 5.2 percent.
