For the quarter ending March 2021, the difference between the number of gross job gains and the number of gross job losses resulted in a net gain of 1.7 million jobs in the private sector. Over this period, job gains topped job losses in 49 states and the District of Columbia.

California had the largest number of job losses for the quarter ending March 2021, with a loss of 833,574 jobs. Other states with a loss of greater than 300,000 jobs were Texas, Florida and New York. These resulted in net gains of 248,054 jobs in California, 109,070 jobs in New York, 86,493 jobs in Florida, and 84,388 jobs in Texas. In addition to California and New York, other states with a net gain in jobs greater than 100,000 were Michigan, Illinois, and Minnesota.
