In February 2022, unemployment rates were lower than they were a year earlier in 388 of the nation's 389 metropolitan areas and higher in 1 area. The largest over-the-year unemployment rate decrease in February occurred in Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nevada (−5.6 percentage points). Rates fell over the year by at least 4.0 percentage points in an additional eight areas, including Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey (−5.4 percentage points) and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California (−5.0 percentage points). Yuma, Arizona, recorded the only jobless rate increase (+1.8 percentage points).

Elkhart-Goshen, Indiana, had the lowest unemployment rate, 1.7 percent, followed by Logan, Utah-Idaho, and Provo-Orem, Utah, 1.8 percent each. El Centro, California, had the highest rate, 14.0 percent in February 2022, though this was 3.4 percentage points lower than it was a year earlier.

Of the 51 metro areas with a 2010 Census population of 1 million or more, Salt Lake City, Utah, had the lowest jobless rate in February, 2.2 percent, followed by Indianapolis-Carmel-Anderson, Indiana, and Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, Minnesota-Wisconsin, 2.4 percent each. Cleveland-Elyria, Ohio, had the highest unemployment rate, 6.4 percent. All 51 large areas had over-the-year unemployment rate decreases from February 2021 to February 2022, the largest of which was in Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise. The smallest rate decrease over the year occurred in Birmingham-Hoover, Alabama (−0.9 percentage point).
