Eggflation rate lower, milk prices decrease, in February 2023

In February 2023, producer prices for chicken eggs were 64.3 percent higher than a dozen months earlier. During the 10 months before that, from April 2022 to January 2023, the 12-month increase in egg prices was never below 120.2 percent (in September 2022) and cracked 280.9 percent (November 2022). The seven largest over-the-year increases in egg prices occurred during those 10 months in 2022 and 2023. (Egg price data start in 1938.)

Over the year ended February 2023, raw milk prices decreased 13.3 percent. Raw milk prices in February 2022 were 44.4 percent higher than a year earlier. The 12-month change in raw milk prices reached 48.9 percent in March 2022, which left many milk-drinkers in a sour mood.

Overall, prices for farm products increased 5.1 percent from February 2022 to February 2023, compared with 12.1 percent over the year ended January 2023. Final demand food prices were up 6.9 percent from February 2022 to February 2023, compared with an increase of 11.4 percent over the year ended January 2023.
