Nonfarm payroll employment rose by 517,000 in January 2023. Job growth was widespread in January, led by gains in leisure and hospitality (+128,000), professional and business services (+82,000), and health care (+58,000). Employment also increased in government, partially reflecting the return of university workers from a strike.

The employment increase in professional and business services was led by gains in professional, scientific, and technical services, which added 41,000 jobs in January 2023.

Within health care, ambulatory health care services (+30,000), nursing and residential care facilities (+17,000), and hospitals (+11,000) added jobs in January.
