Employment in government increased by 71,000 from February 2024 to March 2024, higher than the average monthly gain of 54,000 over the prior 12 months. Employment increased in local government (+49,000) and federal government (+9,000) in March. Leisure and hospitality employment trended up in March 2024 (+49,000) and has returned to its pre-pandemic February 2020 level. Over the prior 12 months, job growth in the industry averaged 37,000 per month. Construction employment was up 39,000 over the month, about double the average monthly gain of 19,000 over the prior 12 months.
Employment in the other services (+16,000) and social assistance (+9,000) industries continued to trend upward in March. Little or no employment change was seen over the month in other major industries, including retail trade; mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction; manufacturing; wholesale trade; transportation and warehousing; information; financial activities; and professional and business services.
