In August, unemployment rates were higher in 6 states and the District of Columbia, lower in 1 state, and stable in 43 states. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 4 states, decreased in 1 state, and was essentially unchanged in 45 states and the District.

July jobless rates up over the year in 350 of 389 metro areas; payroll jobs up in 61

Jobless rates were higher in July than a year earlier in 350 of the 389 metropolitan areas, lower in 22, and unchanged in 17. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 61 metropolitan areas, decreased in 1, and was essentially unchanged in 327.

In 2023, annual average unemployment rates decreased in 6 states, increased in 2, and were little changed in 42 states and the District of Columbia. Employment-population ratios increased in 10 states and were little changed in 40 states and the District.

South Dakota had the lowest unemployment rate in July 2024, 2.0 percent, closely followed by Vermont, 2.1 percent, and North Dakota, 2.2 percent. The jobless rate in Mississippi, 2.7 percent, set a new series low. read more »
