The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. Indexes are available for the U.S. and various geographic areas. Average price data for select utility, automotive fuel, and food items are also available.

CPI for all items rises 0.2% in August; shelter up

In August, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.2 percent, seasonally adjusted, and rose 2.5 percent over the last 12 months, not seasonally adjusted. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.3 percent in August (SA); up 3.2 percent over the year (NSA).

Consumer prices up 2.9 percent from July 2023 to July 2024

Over the year ended July 2024, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 2.9 percent. This was the first time since March 2021 that 12-month increase was below 3.0 percent, when prices rose 2.6 percent. Food prices rose 2.2 percent from July 2023 to July 2024, compared with increases of 4.9 percent from July 2022 to July 2023 and 10.9 percent from July 2021 to July 2022. read more »
