There was 0.7 unemployed person per job opening in six states (Connecticut, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington) and 0.8 unemployed person per job opening in New York, where there were 405,000 unemployed people and 528,000 job openings in September.
Nationwide, the ratio of unemployed persons per job opening was 0.5 in September 2022, as there were 5,753,000 unemployed people and 10,717,000 job openings.
The number of job openings by state ranged from about 25,000 in Vermont and Wyoming to over one million in Texas and California. The number of job openings increased in 10 states, decreased in 1 state, and was little changed in 39 states and the District of Columbia in September 2022.
