Job openings rates up in Arizona, Vermont, and Connecticut
March 31, 2025
In January 2025, job openings rates increased in 3 states, decreased in 2 states, and were little changed in 45 states and the District of Columbia. Job openings rates increased in Arizona and Vermont, up 1.4 percentage points each. The rate in Arizona increased from 5.3 percent to 6.7 percent, while Vermont's job openings rate increased from 4.9 percent to 6.3 percent. In Connecticut, the job openings rate increased 1.0 percentage point, from 4.1 percent to 5.1 percent.

The decreases in job openings rates were in Delaware (−1.1 points), from 4.8 percent to 3.7 percent, and Oklahoma (−0.8 point), from 5.2 percent to 4.4 percent. Over the month, the national job openings rate changed little.
The number of job openings increased in 6 states, decreased in 2 states, and changed little in 42 states and the District of Columbia in January 2025. The largest increases in the number of job openings occurred in Arizona, up 53,000 to 233,000, and Pennsylvania up 45,000 to 287,000. Job openings were up 26,000 in both Massachusetts (increasing to 227,000) and Tennessee (increasing to 171,000). The decreases occurred in Oklahoma (−15,000) and Delaware (−6,000). Nationally, the number of job openings changed little.

The job openings rate is computed by dividing the number of job openings by the sum of employment and job openings and multiplying that quotient by 100. Job openings include all positions that are open on the last business day of the reference month. A job is open only if it meets three conditions: (1) A specific position exists and there is work available for that position. (2) The job could start within 30 days. (3) The employer is actively recruiting workers from outside the establishment to fill the position.
