Number of long-term unemployed was 1.8 million in July 2025

In July 2025, both the unemployment rate, at 4.2 percent, and the number of unemployed people, at 7.2 million, changed little. The number of long-term unemployed (people jobless for 27 weeks or more) increased by 179,000 to 1.8 million in July and was up by 283,000 over the year.
The long-term unemployed represented 24.9 percent of the unemployed in July, the highest percentage since February 2022. Over the last decade, this ratio has ranged from 4.0 percent in April 2020 to 42.9 percent in March 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
