Consumer Expenditure Surveys

CE Publications

CE publications provide information related to survey data, trends, analysis, and methods. This page presents an overview of CE publications published through official BLS series, including the Monthly Labor Review, Beyond the Numbers, Handbook of Methods, and others. Additional CE program publications, documents, and presentations are available via the online CE library and topic-specific pages.

  • Annual reports summarize major trends of the last year. Each report discusses the trends and provides tables of average expenditures, income, and demographics. The reports use integrated survey data and are usually published a few months after the annual news release. The next release of the Annual Report is in Spring 2018.

  • Anthologies discuss methodological and analytical issues. The methodological articles discuss improvements in collecting, processing, and publishing information. The analytical articles provide information on current topics of interest using CE data. This series was discontinued in 2011.

  • Beyond the Numbers discuss specific data trends or methodological issues.

  • Biennial reports summarize trends of the previous two years. The reports compare CE data with other data sources and provide tables with additional detail. In addition, the biennial reports include tables of average annual data over a 2-year period. These reports use integrated survey data and are published every two years. This series was discontinued in 2007.

  • BLS Handbook of Methods, Consumer Expenditures and Income Chapter provides an overview of CE concepts, data sources, survey design, calculations, presentation, and history.

  • CE Data Comparison Articles and Presentations compare CE data to similar data sets by other organizations.

  • Economic Working Papers by CE staff discuss research findings by CE staff and outside researchers.

  • Issues in Labor Statistics discuss current labor market topics using data from the Consumer Expenditure Surveys. This series was discontinued in 2006.

  • Monthly Labor Review Articles using CE data discuss specific data trends or methodological issues in depth.
