Relationship with state-level projections
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) employment projections are prepared for the nation as a whole. These projections are developed on an annual basis for 10 years in the future. Each state is responsible for developing its state's 10-year industry and occupational projections, using input from the national employment projections as needed. State projections are developed in the Labor Market Information (LMI) offices.
While each state LMI office has its own methodology for producing their projections, they each use long-term projections from BLS as an input. Some states also produce projections for more detailed substate geographic regions, and some produce short-term projections. The products that each state produces vary due to differences in requirements and resources.
Role of the Projections Managing Partnership (PMP)
The Projections Managing Partnership (PMP) operates an integrated, nationwide program of state and local projections. Governed by a voluntary board of nine state LMI directors, the PMP supports each state LMI team in developing the most reliable and relevant occupational and industry outlook information. Some of the ways in which the PMP supports state-level projections include maintaining shared software, standardizing methodology, and offering technical assistance to state analysts as they develop projections data.
Role of the Employment and Training Administration (ETA)
Funding for the PMP is provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration (ETA), with technical support from BLS and other entities across the country. ETA provides Workforce Information Grants to states to develop state-level employment projections. These projections complement other statistical activities at the state level under the federal-state cooperative program funded by BLS, as well as the national employment projections.
Data users
Like the national projections, state- and substate-level projections may be used to make informed career decisions. Projections data are also vital for aligning education and training program planning needs with in-demand jobs. Together with the national projections, state projections are widely used by policymakers to make decisions about education and training, funding allocations, and program offerings.
