Notice of Series Changes with the Update to the North American Industry Classification System 2007 and Annual Benchmark Release on February 1, 2008

With the release of January 2008 data on February 1, 2008, the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program updated its National Nonfarm Payroll series to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 2007 from the NAICS 2002 basis and also released the annual benchmark revision. For more information about NAICS in the CES program, see www.bls.gov/ces/naics/home.htm.

Update to NAICS 2007

The conversion to NAICS 2007 resulted in minor definitional changes within manufacturing, telecommunications, financial activities, and professional and technical services. Several industry titles and descriptions also were updated.

Changes as a Result of Annual Sample Review

All CES series are evaluated annually for sample size, coverage, and response rates. Some very small industries no longer have sufficient sample to be estimated and published separately. The following series were discontinued:

The CES survey also updated industry titles to reflect similar changes in the NAICS 2007 update. The scope of each industry is not affected by the title changes.
