Nonfarm Payroll Employment: Revisions between over-the-month estimates, 1979-present

The Current Employment Statistics (CES) first preliminary estimates of employment, hours, and earnings are published each month approximately 3 weeks after the reference period. Estimates are then revised twice, before being held constant until the annual benchmarking process. Second preliminary estimates for a given month are published the month following the initial release, and final sample-based estimates are published 2 months after the initial release. Monthly employment change figures shown in the table do not reflect subsequent changes due to the introduction of benchmark revisions, seasonal adjustment, or other updates.

Mean absolute revisions indicate the overall magnitude of change to the estimates, while the mean revisions are a measure of whether there is a bias in direction of the revisions. The closer the mean revision is to zero, the less indication that revisions are predominantly either upward or downward.

**The time periods are before and after implementation of the new, probability-based sample design in 2003. Revision data is not available for part of 2003. Therefore, the time periods included in each column are as follows:

2nd - 1st: (First period) January 1979 - March 2003; (Second period) May 2003 - Current month

3rd - 2nd: (First period) January 1979 - February 2003; (Second period) May 2003 - Current month
