Current Employment Statistics - CES (National)

Experimental Size Class Employment, Hours, and Earnings Series from the Current Employment Statistics Survey

The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program has been examining the feasibility of publishing monthly CES employment, hours, and earnings estimates by firm size. Initial research suggested that the available sample might ultimately make it feasible to publish monthly size-class employment estimates by major industry sector. User feedback had indicated that employment change by firm size would add a valuable dimension of detail to understanding current employment trends.

On February 14, 2012, BLS released experimental size class data from the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program; these data included National level estimates by major industry sector from April 1990 through March 2011. Based on user input and internal analysis, BLS considered refinements to the initial methodology and was working on developing updated size class estimates based upon these changes. However, due to resource limitations these updates cannot be provided at this time. Furthermore, the additional research into firm-size based estimation revealed both errata and issues with the original methodology in the previously released experimental data. Therefore, BLS has removed that data and information from this web page.
